Conventions and other odorous gatherings.

“Have any of you seen my badge and lanyard?” This is the mantra of the convention. That and, “Got any more snacks?”

From comic books to role playing games and everything in between, we’re spending some time wandering the holy halls of the convention center.   You’ve already been preregistered and the dealer hall is open!

Get in line and prepare for some free swag that you’ll never need. It’s the convention show! What’s that smell?

Baker Street, both the Boys and the Irregulars.

Baker Street, both the Boys and the Irregulars.

‘Ello gov’na!

We’re revisiting a topic that we tackled previously from a different angle. On this week’s episode, we’re talking about the world’s greatest detective. No, not Batman and not Jessica Fletcher. If you haven’t solved this mystery yet, I’m referring to Sherlock Holmes!

However, we’re hitting the cobblestones with the BBC series, ‘The Baker Street Boys’ and the recent Netflix update, ‘The Irregulars’. They’re Sherlock’s young brigade of street level sleuths, who get into all kinds of trouble.

We’ve put on our deerstalker and are calling in a favor from Mr. Pipe, in order to crack this case. Turn on your gaslight lanterns and prick up your ears, let us regale you with tales of mystery and mayhem.

Cheerio, mates!

Ultraman or “Rubber Suits 101”

Ultraman or “Rubber Suits 101”

We all want to spend our lives fending off giant rubber suited monsters. This is every child’s dream, growing up. For this very special episode, we’re using our Beta Capsule to transform into Ultraman!

With a history that dates back to 1966, this kaiju fighting hero has deep roots. If you’re unfamiliar with Ultraman, then that’s about to all change.   Get ready to stomp on some major cities and kick some kaiju keister.

Luckily, we’ve got more than 3 minutes to spend on the topic. Ultraman, GO! (Also, that’s Kate Schellenbach with the Beastie Boys in the pic above!)

This week’s Geek Life Radio Song/Artist of the week is “Confessions of a Neckbeard” by Wesley and the Crushers!

Wesley And The Crushers · 02 Confessions Of A Neckbeard

“Wesley”, known by many as the very soul of the Crushers, surprisingly did not always see himself as destined for greatness in the musical world. Many years ago, at a pivotal point in his life — failing the entrance exam to the Star-Fleet academy for the third consecutive time — “Wesley” was approached by the Traveler — an interstellar being who showed “Wesley” the vision of two possible life courses: one where he is a Star-Fleet Commander, and one where he is a dread-pirate, forever sailing long forgotten seas. Horrified by either option, “Wesley” began screaming in anguish, which, shocking to both him and the Traveler, was actually quite beautiful… and from that moment on, “Wesley” never stopped singing.

Mortal Kombat 1995 vs 2021!

Test your might! MORTAL KOMBAAAAAAAAAT!

Fighting games are a huge part of your history as friends. We also have sat through quite a few horrible movie adaptations of those same games. For our big show this week, we’re revisiting the game and the original Paul W.S. Anderson movie!

How will it hold up against player 2? That’s right, we’re loading up HBO Max’s brand new ‘Mortal Kombat’ film to pit them against each other in a fight for the ages. If you have any cheat codes, dust them off and stretch your fingers.

Christopher Lambert is about to be your guide through our ‘Mortal Kombat’ show. Now, GET OVER HERE! and give this episode a listen!

Hobbies, and things we used to do for fun.

Hobbies, and things we used to do for fun.

Spare time. Something we don’t have much of, but we’re always striving to get more of. What do you do in your spare time? That’s what ’40 Going On 14′ is going to dig into this week.

Hobbies! What keeps you busy? Applehead dolls? Role playing? Digging shallow graves for your fallen enemies? Mike, Pat, Joel and Josh want to know and we want to share our personal hobbies as well.

Carve out some time in your schedule and put down that needlework. We want to bend your ear with one of our own hobbies, podcasting. It’s kind of meta, right?

Punky Brewster and other bad ideas.

Punky Brewster and other bad ideas.

This is the show that all of you have been waiting for! With all of the reboots and carrying on of old series, this one finally happened. We’re talking about ‘Punky Brewster’!

A family friendly sitcom from the 80’s that told the story of an orphaned girl and her elder caretaker, this show is now being updated for the modern era. If you like your laughter canned and your jokes sanitary, then have we got an episode for you.

Grab those mismatched Chuck Taylor’s and a big ol’ mug of nostalgia, as we’re talking some serious Punky Power! wait, Glomer isn’t involved?

And as promised the Eddie Deezen movie poster.

We’re in the road movie to nowhere.

We’re in the road movie to nowhere.

Ah, the road movie, a journey of friends (sometimes) aiming at a destination (or destinations) as their goal. But what actually is a “Road Movie”? Well, this week the 40 Going On 14 guys discuss this and try to figure it out. Mike, Pat, Joel and Josh discuss their favorite road movies, plots, tropes and make sure not to call it a “Road Trip” (that’s totally different.)

Justice Leagues and Nightmare Scarecrows

Justice Leagues and Nightmare Scarecrows

We grew up on the ‘Super Friends’. A show that took earth’s mightiest heroes and made them, well, kind of lame. What we didn’t realize was that there was a Justice League that was anything but lame.

This week, on ’40 Going on 14′, we’re revisiting Superman, Aquaman, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Cyborg and a slew of others as we take on Bruce Timm’s ‘Justice League’ and the Zack Snyder-verse version.

It’s going to get dark, as two worlds collide. Are you ready to take on the challenge? Also, who knew Aquaman was such a cool superhero?

Dreams, Sleeping and why we don’t get enough.

Dreams, Sleeping and why we don’t get enough.

To sleep, perchance to dream. We all have to sleep, but do we all dream? On this very special episode of ’40 Going On 14′, we’re wearing our comfy pajamas and snuggling up for some late night chatter about the art of sleeping & dreams.

How many hours a night do we need? What’s our bedtime rituals? What the heck is up with night terrors? Who needs Freddy Krueger, when you’ve experienced this phenomenon!

We’ve spent a large portion of our lives in a state of slumber, so we pretty much think we’re experts. Pull the blankets up around your head and pull your feet under the covers. It’s the sleeping and dreams sho…. zzzz….

Coming to (2) America, and also Eddie Murphy.

Coming to (2) America, and also Eddie Murphy.

Back in the 80’s Eddie Murphy was “a thing”, everyone knew his Gumby and Mr. Robinson’s Neighborhood from SNL, and he had started a solid movie career with 48 Hours, Trading Places and Beverly Hills Cop. He had also stepped into music with Party All The Time, starring Eddie and Rick James. (and more recently My Name Is Dolomite! Check out that show HERE!) But then, he teamed up with Arsenio Hall, who was rising to the top of his game also, hosting The Arsenio Hall Show which ran from ’89-’94, and also voicing Winston Zeddmore on the Real Ghostbusters! (Remember that?!)

The result of that sweet, sweet paring of “guys who like to play dress up” was Coming To America, the heartwarming rom-com(?) of Prince Akeem and his search for true love in Queens. It was a hit, and grossed over $288M worldwide, so the sequel Coming 2 America (see what they did?) was no surprise. In this Amazon Original Prince Akeem is back on the trail in Queens, but this time looking for the son he did not know he had!
